Shelter,curfew make council agenda

— The Corsicana City Council will be asked to realign the salaries and job titles of the animal shelter workers — when the city finds some — at its regular meeting Tuesday evening.
The council will meet in a work session at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and in a formal meeting at 6 p.m. at the Government Center, 200 N. 12th St.
On the agenda is an item to change the job titles and pay grades of almost all the shelter workers. Two weeks ago, all of the city’s animal shelter workers either quit or were fired.
Since then, the shelter has been operated by police officers and volunteers.
“We’re reorganizing the animal shelter and animal control to allow one person to be responsible for all the services,” said City Manager Connie Standridge. The new “animal services manager” will oversee all the operations dealing with animals.
Applications will be reviewed starting Monday, Standridge said.
Although the pay grades are changing, the shelter isn’t expected to receive more money in next year’s budget, she said.
“Overall, it’s budget neutral,” Standridge said.
The one-hour work session will be dedicated to discussing the city’s budget for next year. The city is looking at a slight increase in property taxes and less sales taxes, which means the budget should be flat compared to last year’s budget.
A report on the city’s annual audit will also be presented at Tuesday’s meeting, along with a proposal to change the land-use tables, and to renew the city’s night-time curfew rules.
