New MISD building delayed

By Janet Jacobs

Mildred’s new elementary school building won’t be ready for the Aug. 25 first day of school, after all.

Mildred school board trustees voted Monday to delay the opening of the new building for at least two weeks, according to Becky Burns, assistant superintendent. The action does not affect the start of classes for elementary students.

The board did a walk-through of the project Monday, and was pleased with the progress, overall, she said.

“The board is pleased to find the facility ready to move into, however, there are a few critical things that need to be completed,” Burns said. “We’re going to start school right here (in the main building) but it will only be for a few weeks.”

Mildred voters approved a bond issue last year to build a new elementary school, fine arts building and field house, and construction crews have been working frantically to finish the projects in time for school to start. Among the projects still to be completed is the gym floor, kitchen and some furniture moving.

“It was a very hard decision,” Burns said. “But weather was a factor, our furniture order is a factor, another factor is we wanted to provide the best scenario possible for the start of school for the students and staff, and to make sure Freeman has the best environment to continue great work in the little dab of details they’ve got to go.”

“We’re really moving two campuses, the elementary there, and the junior high here,” said Burns, speaking from her office, which is in the old elementary building. “We’ll begin a little at a time but there are some critical things to be completed.”
