Dawson Garden Club

Dawson Garden Club has selected the home of Azelene Cardenas at 703 Gilmer St., Dawson, as Yard of the Month for August. Cardenas credits her son Bubba Jones with having done the most work on the yard. It has a neat flower bed edged with white stones along the front of the house and a nice lawn with trees and shrubs for greenery.

James Blair Chapter, DAR

James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will present the Kinsloe House Woman’s Club House Association luncheon at noon Sept. 10. DAR Kinsloe House director is Margaret Thomas. Co-hostesses for this Constitution luncheon will be Beth Chapman and Billie Love McFerran. Other hostesses for the luncheon will include Ellen Adair, Sandra Curtis, Corinne Lee, Merle Slagle, Margaret Thomas and Christine Williams.

The Honorable Judge John H. Jackson of the 13th District Court will be the speaker for the event.

Jackson is the eldest son of Howard and Joyce Jackson of Powell. He graduated from Kerens High School, attended Texas A&M University and received his law degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston in 1976. He was assistant district attorney for 20 years, elected district judge in 1996 and took office in January 1997. He is married to the former Jan Ray. They have two adult sons, both of whom graduated from Texas Tech.

Reservations are due by noon Sept. 8 by calling Kinsloe House at (903) 874-5791.

Also, in celebration of DAR Constitution Week, churches, courthouses, city governments and individuals are asked to ring their bells at 3 p.m. Sept. 17 in honor of Bells Across America. This sound of patriotism will be heard simultaneously from coast to coast.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is an historical genealogical heritage organization open to female descendants of American patriots who served or gave service to the American government during the American Revolutionary War. For more information regarding membership, contact chapter registrar Barbara Shore at (903) 872-9529 or go online to the James Blair Chapter Web site at www.geocities.com/jamesblairtxdar.

Woman’s Club House Association

Hostesses for the Sept. 3 Kinsloe House luncheon will be members of the civic interest committee, which consists of chairman Marsha Banks, Ann Edwards, Lynda Green, Martha Grove, Jenna Hall, Jera O’Neal and Arlene Stewart.

The program will be a review by Banks of Dr. Nick Trout’s “Tell Me Where It Hurts — A Day of Humor, Healing, and Hope in My Life as an Animal Surgeon.” One does not have to be a pet owner or pet lover to appreciate this “fascinating insider portrait of a veterinarian, his furry patients ... interesting cutting-edge technology” plus lots of humor and some heartbreak.

Members are urged to make reservations for this program by calling Kinsloe House at (903) 874-5791 by noon Sept. 1. Cancellations are also due by the same time.

Corsicana Newcomers Club

Corsicana Newcomers Club will meet Aug. 28 at Kinsloe House. Social time will be at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Instead of a speaker, there will be a special program with Zanada Tally singing. For information about Corsicana Newcomers Club, call Jane Sanders at (903) 874-0808. Everyone is welcome — newcomers to the area or people who have lived here their entire lives.
