20 Under 40 - Lowell Thompson

Thompson county’s top prosecutor and fan

By Bob Belcher

In 1997, a young lawyer started in his job as an Assistant District Attorney at the Navarro County Courthouse.

Today, R. Lowell Thompson is the county’s top prosecutor, serving as Navarro County District Attorney.

Thompson, 38, has spent over a decade in public service in Corsicana, with his tenure first as an assistant DA, then as Corsicana’s Municipal Judge. He was elected District Attorney in 2006.

Born in Nacogdoches, Thompson “grew up” in Navarro County, first attending school in Frost where his father, former CISD Athletic Director Sam Thompson, was a coach and teacher. Kerens was also home for a time, as was Corsicana, where the family moved when Thompson was in the sixth grade.

There was little question what path Thompson’s career would take — the law.

“Since high school, that is all I’ve ever wanted to do,” Thompson said.

It was after his graduation from Texas Tech in 1997 that Thompson decided he wanted to return home to Navarro County.

“I owe a lot to Navarro County. The only reason I was able to go to law school was because of the Collins Scholarship I received,” Thompson recalls.

“I received so many benefits from living here. I want to give back,” he added.

Thompson played football while at CHS, alongside teammates such as Daniel Biltz, Keith Moore, Jeff Schafer, John Ingham and others. He credits the guidance he received from a couple of his mentors — his father and now-CISD superintendent Don Denbow — with helping him reach his goals.

“I was very fortunate to come through a program that not only taught you football, but how to deal with life and be a good man. I was fortunate to have my dad as a part of that,” he said.

With family and friends spread throughout the county, Thompson and his wife, the former Brandy Hines, a high school teacher, make Corsicana home with their two children.
