Through Oct. 3
Mildred Independent School District will dismiss classes at 1:10 p.m. to allow teachers time to move into their classrooms in the new elementary building. Classes will begin in the new building Oct. 6.
Oct. 2
Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at Blooming Grove Fire Station. The speaker will be Clay Beard, local attorney and candidate for district judge. Light refreshments will be served.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3366, located at Veterans Drive off West State Highway 31, will have its monthly meeting of all members in good standing at 6:30 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend and be involved in decisions concerning the post activities. An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Navarro Shrine Building, 323 N. Commerce St. For more information, visit www.redcross.org or call (800) 448-3543. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and have a photo ID. Eat well and drink plenty of fluids before coming to donate.
A ribbon cutting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave., for its beautification and restoration effort. The open house will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Recognition will be given to several people who have helped with this project, which was a vision of Single Believers Ministries. Special recognition will be given to Stephen Farris, who is on the SBM board and has helped in many ways with this project. The public is welcome to attend the ribbon cutting and open house. Oct. 3
Blooming Grove Historical Society will have an outside bake sale fund-raiser beginning at 8 a.m. in downtown Blooming Grove on Fordyce Street near Prosperity Bank.
Twilight Home, a non-profit facility, will have a homecoming hamburger dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Fourth Avenue parking lot on the west side of the nursing home. Hamburger plates will be sold for a donation of $6 and will include a burger with trimmings, pinto beans, chips and dessert. Plates are to go only. Tickets may be purchased at Twilight Home or call (903) 872-2521 to reserve tickets. A limited number of tickets will be sold the day of the hamburger dinner.
Oct. 3-4
Corsicana Art League will sponsor “Paint Historic Corsicana.” Look for the bright yellow shirts as artists paint the historic sights of Corsicana during the day Oct. 3-4. Anyone interested in participating check in at the Corsicana Visitor Center after 8 a.m. Oct. 3. Cost will be $15 which includes shirt. Paintings will be taken to The Art Spot at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4 for a reception, judging and sale. Paintings will be hung a the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce throughout October.
Oct. 4
The 2008 Hangar Dance and Dinner will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Corsicana Municipal Airport, sponsored by Corsicana Field Aviation Heritage Foundation. Music will be provided by the Corsicana Swing Orchestra. A barbecue dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Advanced ticket prices are $20 per person and may be purchased at the airport or by phone. Tickets on the night of the event will be $25 per person. All proceeds will benefit the construction of the USAAF Cadet Memorial. For more information or tickets, call Sarah at (903) 654-4847.

Richland Volunteer Fire Department will hold a barbecue dinner with all the fixings at 5 p.m. at the fire station. A Remington 270 rifle will be raffled. Raffle tickets are available for any Richland VFD member and will be available on the day of the event.

City of Blooming Grove will hold its monthly city council meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce St.
Corsicana Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. Buddy Wigley will present the last part of the Corsicana Lodge history. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All masons are welcome.
Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have its regular meeting at 10 a.m. at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, the opening day of the PQG 28th annual quilt show. Members are reminded to bring their dishes for the brunch which will follow the meeting and program. Ellis Bennett, the quilt show judge this year, will present a trunk show and a history of quilts. Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have its 28th annual quilt show at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Quilts will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission will be free. On Oct. 29, there will be a drawing for the PQG 2008 donation quilt. The winner need not be present to win. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and may be purchased until the drawing. Several classes and demos will be given during the show, which will be open to the public. PQG members can participate in hand quilting the donation quilt for next year. A national depression screening day event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library, 100 N. Main St. The public is invited to attend. There will be free, anonymous screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. As part of the program, attendees will have the opportunity to complete a brief questionnaire and talk to a health professional about their results. The event will be sponsored by the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and the Family and Consumer Sciences of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service of Navarro County. Senior Circle, a Navarro Regional Hospital sponsored program committed to enriching the lives of adults age 50 and better, will have a “lunch and learn” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the hospital classrooms. Navarro County Animals at Risk Foundation will sponsor a low-cost pet vaccination clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Farmers Market, located on Business 45, next to the Corsicana Daily Sun. Mildred Fire Department will have its annual fund-raiser. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the music of Ira Bradford and Bustin’ Loose Band. Items to be donated to Hurricane Ike survivors such as clothing, bedding, towels and non-perishable foods will be collected from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3000 W. State Highway 22. Distribution point will be Sacred Heart Church in Galveston.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. Corsicana High School Cheerleaders will host their annual Tiger tailgate party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the high school parking lot. Join in for hot dogs, chips, cookies and a drink. Mascots, Tiki and T-bone look forward to visiting you before the Corsicana vs. Ennis football game. You are invited to come support your CHS cheerleaders and have fun tailgating with friends and family. The $5 tickets may be purchased from any CHS cheerleader, mascot or at the party.

Flu vaccines will be administered from 10 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Dawson, located on North Main and Fourth streets, sponsored by the church and Dawson Young at Heart. Providence Home Health Care of Waco will administer shots. There will be no cost for immunizations to Medicare insured and with a Medicare card and another ID.
