Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. Texas Supreme Court Justice Dale Wainwright will be the keynote speaker at a regional rally to be held at 7 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room, 100 N. 12th St. The rally is sponsored by the Republican Party of Navarro County. Wainwright became the first non-incumbent African-American in the history of the state to be elected to the Texas Supreme Court. Wainwright graduated from Howard University (summa cum laude) in 1983 and earned his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1988. He studied at the London School of Economics in Great Britain in 1981 as the laurd scholar. Other local Republican officials and candidates will be invited to speak. Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce invites you to the third annual member reception and fund-raiser from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Cook Center. Cost will be $15 per person, and non-members are welcome. The Oktoberfest theme will include, German style hors d’oeuvres, desserts and beverages. An organizational meeting of the Streetman Historical Association will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Streetman City Hall. Navarro Regional Hospital will go “Passionately Pink for the Cure” with a bake sale to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. The public is invited. The bake sale will be from 7 a.m. until mid-afternoon at the hospital’s dining room. Proceeds will go the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund.
Warehouse Living Arts Center Corsicana Children’s Company will hold auditions for the children’s production, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” at 6:30 p.m. at the WLAC Theatre, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Frances Seidensticker Dodds will direct. The Christmas classic has lots of roles available for baby angels ages 5 to 7, kids ages 8 to 14, older teens, and adults of all ages. The majority of roles will be chosen from the 8- to 12-year-old age range. The production dates will be Dec. 11-14. Corsicana High School Cheerleaders will host their annual Tiger tailgate party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the high school parking lot. Join in for hot dogs, chips, cookies and a drink. Mascots, Tiki and T-bone look forward to visiting you before the Corsicana vs. Ennis football game. You are invited to come support your CHS cheerleaders and have fun tailgating with friends and family. The $5 tickets may be purchased from any CHS cheerleader, mascot or at the party.

James L. Collins Catholic School’s eighth annual fund-raiser, “Bucks, Blues, Barbecue and Casino,” will be held from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at the Collins Catholic gym featuring the Loki band. Cost will be $30 per person, or $15 per person for take-out meals. There will be dancing, spirit and casino fun. Raffle tickets are $1 and drawings will be held all evening. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. This session will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 21, 23, 28 and 29. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Classes are $100 (cash only) for all sessions. All participants must pre-register. Flu vaccines will be administered from 10 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Dawson, located on North Main and Fourth streets, sponsored by the church and Dawson Young at Heart. Providence Home Health Care of Waco will administer shots. There will be no cost for immunizations to Medicare insured and with a Medicare card and another ID. Hamilton-Beeman Memorial Association will hold its annual business meeting at 11 a.m. at Retreat Town Hall, Farm-to-Market Roads 709 and 2555. There will be a covered dish lunch after the meeting. The 11th annual Scarecrow Stroll will be held on Northwest Third Street in Hubbard. Residents along this street decorate their yards with scarecrows and other fall decorations. The street will be blocked off to drive-through traffic from 5 to 7 p.m., so you may stroll down this street and visit with residents and view their fall decorations. A job readiness program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Kerens Library. Stuart Schoppert, manager of the Corsicana office of Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas, will be the speaker. He will include tips on interview skills, dressing for success, and how to fill out a job application. The program will be free and open to both students and adults. This will be the first of series of programs on career choices for residents of the Kerens area.

Central Texas Quarter Horse Association will host a 5D speed barrel race weekend at the Navarro County Exposition Center. Win a saddle or buckle. Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have its 28th annual quilt show at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Quilts will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission will be free. On Oct. 29, there will be a drawing for the PQG 2008 donation quilt. The winner need not be present to win. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and may be purchased until the drawing.
