VOICE and the Kerens Library invites the public to learn more about the La Voz para la Familia (the voice of the family) program from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Kerens Library. There will be snacks, information on signing up for the program and prizes. VOICE will offer this free program to Hispanic families and children at the Kerens Library beginning Oct. 28 for four weeks twice per week. La Voz para la Familia provides an opportunity for adults to improve English and parenting skills while their children are assisted with homework or involved in other activities provided by staff. Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas will host a “Workforce Center Orientation” at 10 a.m. and a job search workshop on “Interview Tips” at 10 a.m. at its office, 720 N. Flu vaccines will be administered from 10 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Dawson, located on North Main and Fourth streets, sponsored by the church and Dawson Young at Heart. Providence Home Health Care of Waco will administer shots. There will be no cost for immunizations to Medicare insured and with a Medicare card and another ID. The Salvation Army will take Christmas applications from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All applicants must apply in person and bring proof of address and current phone number, proof of income and expenses for entire household, ID for all who are to be served, and photo ID for the person applying. One application will be accepted for each address. Toys will be provided for children, 12 and under, living at the address, only. Hamilton-Beeman Memorial Association will hold its annual business meeting at 11 a.m. at Retreat Town Hall, Farm-to-Market Roads 709 and 2555. There will be a covered dish lunch after the meeting. The chairman of each branch circle (Angus, Corsicana, Oak Valley and Retreat) will need to attend and give their report.

The 11th annual Scarecrow Stroll will be held on Northwest Third Street in Hubbard. Residents along this street decorate their yards with scarecrows and other fall decorations. The street will be blocked off to drive-through traffic from 5 to 7 p.m., so you may stroll down this street and visit with residents and view their fall decorations. A job readiness program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Kerens Library. Stuart Schoppert, manager of the Corsicana office of Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas, will be the speaker. He will include tips on interview skills, dressing for success, and how to fill out a job application. The program will be free and open to both students and adults. This will be the first of series of programs on career choices for residents of the Kerens area.
Retreat Volunteer Fire Department, located at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Roads 2555 and 709, will have a garage sale, barbecue sandwiches for sale, a barbecue dinner and auction. The garage sale will start at 8 a.m. and continue until the end of the day. Barbecue sandwiches, chips and drinks will be for sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A barbecue dinner with all the fixings and desserts will be from 5 to 7 p.m. or until it’s all gone. Navarro College’s Rotaract Club will have a canned food drive from 1:30 to 3 p.m. during the Navarro College homecoming pre-game tailgate party, held at Tiger Stadium parking lot. Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have its 28th annual quilt show at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W.
