Martin to seek Pct. 2 post

Holt won’t seek another term as commissioner

Richard E. (Dick) Martin Jr. has announced his intentions to run for the Precinct 2 County Commissioner’s position in the March 2010 Republican Primary. The position is currently held by Faith Holt, who told the Daily Sun she will not seek another term as county commissioner.

Holt was a appointed to the Navarro County Commissioners Court in 2005 after Olin Nickelberry was killed in an automobile accident. She won election to a full term on the commissioners court in 2006 in a challenge against Martin. She’ll wrap up a 27-year career with the county at the end of her term. Prior to joining the commissioners court, Holt was jail captain for the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department. She also logged 13 years of service at Bell Helicopter prior to joining law enforcement.

Martin, 68, who is retired, and active in a number of groups and organizations in the county, is enthusiastic about the future of Navarro County.

“As the economy recovers in our county it is going to bring both opportunity and challenge for us,” said Martin. “I would like to be a part of the Commissioner’s Court team going forward to help us maximize new growth while we preserve the rich heritage of Navarro County and especially Precinct 2.”

Martin is currently involved in volunteer work and as a Board Member of several organizations in Navarro County and the City of Corsicana. He is a founding member and president of STAR, and serves on the boards of the Corsicana Development Committee, Family Services of Navarro County, the Kerens Economic Development Corporation, Friends of the Kerens Library and volunteers with Navarro County Meals on Wheels.

Martin and his wife Janet are seven year residents of Navarro County, having moved here from Dallas where Martin served as an executive with Fidelity Union Life/Allianz Life North America for over 30 years.

“We are thrilled that Dick has decided to enter the Precinct 2 County Commissioners race,” said Frank Steed, chairman of the Republican Party of Navarro County. “Dick’s business background, concern for the community and conservative approach will serve our citizens well.”

Holt, 57, said she will keep busy during her “retirement” from the county by helping out her parents at the family-owned business, Scott Funeral Home, and remain active in several civic groups and organizations.
