The Literary Club
The Literary Club enjoyed a program on Pioneer Village given by Bobbie Young, executive director of the Navarro County Historical Society, and a moment of information about doing genealogy given by Barbara Shore of James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, at the May 21 meeting of The Literary Club. Gelene Simpson was in charge of the program, and the hostesses were Patty Knauth and Geneva Davis.
Also at the May meeting, The Literary Club officers for 2009-2010 were announced: Dottie Mayer, president; Ruth Scott, vice president; Helen Boyd, secretary; Linda Pedersen, treasurer; Gelene Simpson, historian/publicity chairman; Terri Orn, sunshine chairman; and Winona Stewart, director of Woman’s Club House.
The programs for 2009-2010 were announced in the club yearbook at the Sept. 17 meeting. New member Cecelia Alexander was welcomed. Marsha Banks gave a wonderful biographical sketch of the new member and Ruth Scott presented the new member a floral tribute. The hostesses for the meeting were Nan McLain and Terri Orn.
The Oct. 15 meeting was a book review of John Grogan’s book “Marley and Me” done by Marsha Banks. The hostesses were Dottie Mayer and Dorothy Edling. Two new members welcomed at the October meeting were Edna Richardson and Jo Nell Hughes.
The Nov. 19 meeting will be “What Went Wrong” by Bernard Lewis given by Nan McLain. Hostesses will be Geneva Davis and Gelene Simpson.
Woman’s Club House Association
The Kinsloe House noon program luncheon on Nov. 11 will be hosted by the program and yearbook committee. Members of the committee are Cecelia Alexander, Sandy Chambers, Ann Edwards, Jenna Hall, Lana Orsak, Edna Richardson, Arlene Stewart, Joan Summitt and chairman Marsha Banks.
“Waltzing at the Piggly Wiggly,” a novel by Robert Dalby, will be reviewed by Banks, a popular local reviewer. Dalby weaves a delightful tale about the “charming town of Second Creek, Miss., known for its chatty citizens, unusual weather, and elegant ballroom dancing in the most unlikely of places.” Kathy L. Patrick, who recently presented a program at Kinsloe House, listed this novel as one of her bonus books. This promises to be a very entertaining program, so make reservations early for yourself and your guests. Members are reminded that reservations or cancellations are to be made no later than noon Nov. 9 by calling (903) 874-5791.
Navarro County Genealogical Society
Navarro County Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 at the Nancy Roberts Meeting Room of the Corsicana Public Library. The public is invited. The program will be “Researching cemeteries on site and on paper” presented by Barbara Shore and Verna Bonner.
Both Shore and Bonner are experienced researchers who will provide helpful information, searching tips, and add a little humor with interesting epitaphs (short statements in memory of deceased usually put on tombstones). The program will include discussion of new Texas laws regarding cemeteries, cleaning tombstones and making “rubbings” of markers.
This will be the annual meeting for the genealogical society and there will be a brief business meeting for election of officers and tending to business matters.
