FYI 11/07/08

Navarro County Animals at Risk Foundation meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of every month in the sunroom at Heritage Oaks West. Visitors and anyone interested in animal welfare are always welcome. NCARF is also collecting empty ink jet cartridges, empty laser cartridges and digital cell phones to be recycled. Money received from the recycling will help the homeless and neglected animals of Navarro County. Instead of just tossing these items away, save them and save the life of a deserving cat or dog. You can drop off your items at Sonda’s Doggie Doos, 817 N. Main St.; Today Homes, 1131 W. Seventh Ave.; or YMCA, 400 W. Oaklawn. For more information, call (903) 654-3668.

Donations may be made to the Vicki Morehead Fund at Community National Bank, P.O. Box 624, Corsicana, TX 75151, or brought by Victorian Sample Florist, 325 N. Beaton St. Morehead had a stroke Oct. 8 which left her paralyzed on her right side and inability to speak. Donated funds will help with extensive rehab and physical therapy.

Navarro Regional Hospital Auxiliary has a cookbook called “Volunteers in the Kitchen” for sale in the hospital gift shop at $18. Recipes were compiled from the auxiliary volunteers. Proceeds go toward the Winona Stewart Scholarship Fund, which is for students attending Navarro College who are going into the medical field.

Any old interior pictures of the Navarro County Courthouse are being sought. Those during the inception of the courthouse (1905) through the 1930s are especially needed. If you have one of these photos, the Corsicana Preservation Foundation would like to borrow them for a short period of time. You may drop off your photos with Lowell Dunn at Moe and Dunn PLLC, 1200 W. Second Ave.; or with Hugh Stroube at U Store, 310 N. 12th St.

Navarro County Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance meets at 7 p.m. each Tuesday in the fellowship hall at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 N. 14th St. All are welcome to learn to give and to receive support at the weekly meetings. On the first Tuesday of each month, Dr. Tom Sheriff, licensed psychologist, conducts a study of “The Depression Workbook: A Guide for Living with Depression and Manic Depression.” For more information, call (903) 872-6302 or (903) 874-6815.

Young at Heart Club of Blooming Grove, for residents 55 and older, meets from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Blooming Grove Fire Department meeting room. For more information, call Brenda at (903) 354-6837.

Corsicana Downtown R.O.S.E. Association meets at 6 p.m. the third Thursday of each month at the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, 120 N. 12th St.

Two funds have been established for the benefit of the Donnie Evett family. Donations may be made to the Contribution Fund, in care of Jackie Evett Account at Bank of America, 100 N. Main St., Corsicana, TX 75110; Innovative Therapies Inc., in care of Makenzie Evett Account, 3728 S. U.S. Highway 287, Corsicana, TX 75109.

A fund has been established to help with medical expenses for Cecil Easley Jr., who was injured in a motorcycle accident in June. Donations may be made to the Cecil Easley Jr. Special Account at Community National Bank and Trust, 321 N. 15th St., Corsicana, TX 75110.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site volunteers are needed to assist with income tax preparation for 2009 at the Corsicana VITA site, which will be located at the YMCA. Volunteers will receive training from Cathy Scott at Navarro College in mid-December, and will need to pass the IRS basic preparer’s exam. Most volunteers will work one three-hour shift per week. For more information, call George Burrell at (903) 874-2821 or Stuart Schoppert at (903) 874-8276, Ext. 3900. The VITA site will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Jan. 20, and the site will also be open some Saturdays.
