A local attorney has permanently forfeited his right to practice law in Texas as part of a guilty plea to a charge of misdemeanor deadly conduct.
Jacob Davis entered a guilty plea to the charge before County Judge Alan Bristol Thursday. He also was sentenced to one year jail time, probated for one year, and assessed a $1,000 fine.
According to Navarro County District Attorney Steve Keathley, the case stems from an investigation his office has been conducting since October.
Keathley said he was contacted by the Texas Rangers about an accusation that Davis told one of his clients that he could have someone “taken care of, in so many words.”
Keathley said his office obtained a tape of a conversation from the Texas Rangers between Davis and his client, identified as Tom Bennett.
The intended victim of the plot was identified as Richard Miller, an attorney from San Saba.
Keathley said the charge of misdemeanor deadly conduct was decided upon after interviews with Davis and Bennett, and through negotiations with Davis’ attorney, Bill Price.
“Mr. Davis made a very unwise decision, and has had to forfeit his law license,” Keathley said Friday. “After conversations with the proposed victim, the Texas Rangers, and lawyers in my office, we felt this was the right way to go to see that justice was achieved, and that people know you can’t be doing this kind of stuff.”
