Police memorial service Thursday

Corsicana — It was Christmas Eve 1962 when Officer Robert “Bob” Robinson stopped a 63-year-old man in the 400 block of East 10th Avenue in Corsicana. The driver of the car came out of the car carrying a 12-gauge shotgun. Robinson ducked for cover and the driver shot him in the back of the head, killing the police officer. He was survived by his wife and one daughter.

Robinson, as well as 11 other peace officers who have died in Navarro County since 1870, will have their sacrifices  recognized at noon Thursday in the annual Police Memorial Day Ceremony at the Navarro County Courthouse, northeast corner.

The short ceremony will feature a laying of a wreath on the permanent marker on the courthouse lawn, as well as a 21-gun salute from the honor guard.

David James, former police chief for Carrollton, Texas, will be the guest speaker for the event. James now works as a consultant on law enforcement issues, but he served for 21 years with the Dallas Police Department, and another 15 years with the Carrollton Police Department. He has a BS from Abilene Christian College, and is a graduate of the Institute of Law Enforcement Administration’s Command and Management College, and the FBI’s National Academy.
