Local Salvation Army unit responds

Corsicana — After many residents in Navarro County felt or heard the explosion in West around 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, Sgts. Toby and Linda Romack of The Salvation Army received a call at 9 p.m. that night from their disaster command, instructing them to be on standby. At 10 p.m., they received the order to go directly to West.

“Linda and I loaded up our Disaster Canteen and arrived on the scene late Wednesday night, set up at the command center and began preparing hot meals to serve to the many first responders at the scene,” said Sgt. Toby Romack. “We also served water, Gatorade, snacks and lots of coffee. We provided counseling and prayer when needed, as this was a horrific scene.”

They were relieved around 1 p.m. the following day by canteen Sgt. Paul Songer and volunteers George Coppock and Johnny Woods, who continued serving hot meals and refreshments. The Corsicana Canteen was released late Thursday night, returning to Corsicana as other Salvation Army canteens from around the state arrived in West.

“We served around 240 hot meals along with refreshments, snacks, coffee and counseling,” he said. “We are still on standby and could be called back at any time, as this will be a long-term commitment from The Salvation Army.”

The local Salvation Army has depleted its food and beverage supply for the Disaster Canteen, so they are requesting donations of water, Gatorade, and non-perishable food items. All monetary donations should be forwarded to The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters in Dallas so as to expedite its release to the disaster. Donations may also be made online at where a website has been created for West, Texas.

“Please continue to be in prayer for the victims, first responders and volunteers,” Romack said.
