Complaint about illegal dumping leads to bust

Two men are jailed in connection with the discovery of a large cache of weapons, cash and drugs found by Navarro County Sheriff’s Department investigators near Rice Wednesday.

Narcotics investigators were called to the scene on NWCR 0170 Wednesday afternoon after an environmental officer checking on a report of illegal construction trash being buried discovered two suspect and a stolen trailer at the site. He subsequently uncovered a quantity cocaine and marijuana and notified narcotics investigator, said Capt. Elmer Tanner of the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department.

Tanner said a consensual search of one of the suspect’s homes led investigators to a large cache of weapons, including handguns, rifles, assault rifles, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition; over $15,000 in cash; and more marijuana and cocaine. Some of the weapons were wrapped up in duct tape and packaging, he said.

The two suspects were arrested on narcotics charges and transported to the Navarro County Jail where they are awaiting arraignment Thursday, Tanner said.

“The Sheriff’s Department has been in contact with the ATF Task Force in regards to the weapons and possible weapons violations such as smuggling,” Tanner said. The case is still under investigation, and more charges are possible, said Tanner.

“We’re alarmed any time we see that amount of weapons in one locations, especially where narcotics are involved,” Tanner said. “We’re going to thoroughly investigate this incident.”
