Christmas in Action work day brings much needed repairs

Corsicana — The Christmas in Action volunteers included high school students and teachers, bankers, retirees, office managers, police officers and community service workers. They came from different churches, including First Baptist Church, First Methodist, and Second Avenue Baptist. And they brought different skills — painting, plumbing, roofing, woodworking, and just plain tree trimming.

On Saturday, the groups fanned out across the county to apply those skills and their willingness to help to repairing and improving the homes of the elderly and needy in the community.

For NancyAnn Pickens and her husband, it is making a difference in a large and small way. They live on a well-traveled road in the city and as their house began to decline, they needed some help.

“I have had two bad knee surgeries, I have bad lungs, and a brain tumor,” Pickens said. “Me and my husband are limited in funds and abilities, and we appreciate it so much.”

More than 20 students from Corsicana High School worked on their home Saturday, repairing the front porch and painting the exterior. Although they didn’t finish Saturday, they’ll be back, Pickens predicted.

“They’ve been so gracious and kind and helpful,” she said. “It not just helps us, but it changes the town to make it look nice.”

This past Saturday, 18 different groups of Christmas in Action volunteers worked to repair houses inside and out. More projects are scheduled for work next Saturday. The True Value team is going to be tackling a project on the weekend before Thanksgiving, according to President Alan Waldrop.

The goal is to complete repairs on 50 homes before the end of the year.
