Tates running for Pct. 2 County Commissioner

Corsicana — Leon Tates, general manager of the McCoy’s in Corsicana, has filed to run in the March 2014 Republican primary for Precinct 2 Navarro County Commissioner.

He said he intends to run on his basic beliefs and values, including faith, family and fairness, in his campaign.

Tates said he’d like to lend his expertise and work ethic to the citizens of Navarro County as the new commissioner.

“First of all, I just have a heart for people, helping them anyway possible and being able to give back to our community,” Tates said.

Born in Bryan, those beliefs and values were instilled in him at an early age, he said, along with working hard and supporting the community which has helped him in becoming a successful business leader in Corsicana.

After graduating from A & M Consolidated High School in College Station, Tates continued his education at both ITT Technical Institute, where he first pursued a career in Computer Aided Drafting and Design and later added Business Management to his resume after attending Paul Quinn University. He said those tools have helped him gain over 20-years of experience in the designing, building, and construction industries, giving him valuable experience in managing people, operations and multimillion-dollar budgets.

Tates says he is a “common sense leader,” and said his platform includes keeping local tax dollars in Navarro County with contractors, vendors and jobs.

Tates said he is more than willing to stand with the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department, volunteer fire fighters and the men and women who serve for our safety on a daily basis, and making sure governing boards reflect the community or entity they are governing.

He said he is a firm believer in communication and as Commissioner of Precinct 2, his door will be open for the community.

“I’m a hands-on servant leader,” Tates said. “I want to listen to the concerns of the citizens and do my best to get the job done and be accessible to my constituents.”

Some of the his top priorities listed on his campaign website are: A passion for being the best steward of his county during his time on the county commission; to leave Navarro County better than before being elected; a desire to focus not only on the immediate challenges of the day, but also to have a vision for the future of the county; an ability to not only solve problems, but also to add to the problem-solving capacity of your community; a thorough understanding of the issues before the county commission and an appreciation of the impact that actions will have in the community; and adherence to exercising ethical behavior in the performance of his duties and an avoidance of even the appearance of impropriety, as well as a capacity to get things done for the constituents while promoting the mutual nature of the county commission.

His website is www.leontatesforcommissioner.com.

“While the challenges facing our county appear to be greater than ever before,” said Tates, “I am committed to ensuring the viability and sustainability of our county, which is what makes communities work.”

Tates lives in Corsicana with his wife Yolanda. They have two daughters, Jasmine and Leah. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Boy’s & Girl’s Club, Corsicana Area Chamber of Commerce and is president of the Carroll Elementary PTO.

Tates is running against incumbent Commissioner Richard “Dick” Martin in the Republican primary. There is no Democratic candidate.
