Palace event winner takes national crown

Corsicana — Mrs. Texas, Austen Williams, winner of the Texas competition held at Corsicana’s Palace Theatre in December, was crowned Mrs. America 2013 on Aug. 28 at the Lowes Ventana Canyon Resort and Spa in Tucson.  

On the eve of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech in Washington, D.C., Williams’ dream came true. She is the first African American to win the title in 37 years.  

A pageant veteran, Williams was also the first African-American South Carolina Teen USA in 2002, and was awarded the congeniality award at Miss Teen USA 2002. The first runner-up was Mrs. Idaho, and second runner-up was Mrs. Nevada. Using the online social media outlets, the 2013 Mrs. America Competition was broadcast live on Livestream.com

Williams walk across the stage was just the beginning of a journey that will take her to every corner of the country during her year of service as Mrs. America 2013 and bringing awareness to her platform of Promoting Human Trafficking awareness. Most recently, Williams performed in the film “8 Days,” which is scheduled for release in November. All proceeds from the film will go toward anti-human trafficking organizations and safe homes for rescued victims of trafficking.

Williams has been modeling, acting, singing, and dancing for nearly 25 years, and had done more than 40 regional and national jobs by the time she graduated from high school. To date she has performed in dozens of films, TV shows, theatrical productions, and fitness videos, as well as countless modeling jobs, including work for clients like Abercrombie and Fitch, K-Swiss, Hanes, L'eggs, Sony, Prevention Magazine, MTV, The Firm, Vibe Magazine, and Best Body Magazine,.

A graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Williams spends her time being a wife to Marcel, and mommy to her little boy, Marc, and her baby girl, Michal. She also owns a photography business, Sugarbabe Photography, a full service baby, children, and family lifestyle portraiture company. When she is not working in photography she still dabbles in the entertainment industry, co-hosting a teen talk show called, InSight.

Each year, 52 delegates (all U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the National First Runner Up) compete for the coveted title. Imitated but never duplicated, “Mrs. America” remains the first, and still the foremost competition for married women. The national competition is devoted to emphasizing that America's 70 million married woman are extraordinarily beautiful, poised, articulate and versatile.

Each of the 52 contestants, ranging in age from the 20 to 50, earns the right to participate in the national event by winning her state competition.
