Texas Rangers have been asked to investigate a case of alleged gravel theft from a county road, according to Sheriff Elmer Tanner.
The case stems from a complaint that a man saw a property owner using his own equipment Saturday to smooth gravel from the county road up his own driveway on County Road Southwest 0020 in Precinct 3.
The man said that when county crews graded the road, they created a berm in front of his driveway and he was smoothing it out so his cars could get out without damage. The man said the county commissioner had said he could smooth it out.
The deputy said the driveway had gravel consistent with that in the public road about 50 feet up the driveway.
The deputy checked with the commissioner, who said he’d given permission for the homeowner to smooth out the road.
Because it involves a comissioner, the sheriff referred the case to the Texas Rangers for any further investigation, Tanner said.
