One man was transported to Navarro Regional Hospital after being overcome at a fire that got away from him Friday afternoon on Southeast County Road 0070 on the outskirts of Corsicana.
Two witnesses, Cole Taylor and Hayden Fox, who arrived first on the scene said it appeared that the man had been burning trash in a metal bin, and it got away from him. He was kneeling on the ground near the edge of the fire when they arrived at the farm.
“We saw a huge black smoke,” Fox said, explaining why he and Taylor came up the road to help.
They pulled the man to safety and called 9-1-1, Taylor said. “I’m just glad I saw him,” he said. “He was bent over on his elbows.”
By then, the fire had spread to a nearby row of 40 rolls of rye hay and a nearby metal barn. Fox said they tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but it spread quickly in the dry grass.
The fire took place on a farm located about three miles south of Texas Highway 31.
Responding to the blaze were firefighters from Corsicana, Retreat, Powell, Richland, Navarro, Eureka and Kerens, as well as the American Red Cross.
