Tillis, Morgan set for Sept. 21 Palace debut

Corsicana — The Palace Theatre is pleased to present the Grits and Glamour Tour featuring Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m.  Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan are currently delighting old and new fans across North America on their highly successful Grits and Glamour Tour. From the road to the red carpet, on center stage in the theater or under the spotlight in a honkytonk, these two women are comfortable in their high heels. Veteran recording artists and performers, they grace the country format with style, flair, and undeniable talent that is captivating and timeless.

Tillis said in an interview with the Daily Sun the idea for the Grits and Glamour Tour came up a few years ago.

“Through the years, you’ll combine different artists for different tours,” Tillis said. “You try to keep it fresh for the audience … combinations that bring everybody out.”

A trip to the Grand Ole Opry one night resulted in a meeting with Opry perfomer Lorrie Morgan - one that was followed by lunch and a conversation about their musical pasts and possible futures.

“And that was three years ago,” Tillis added with a laught, as the Grits and Glamour Tour was born.

“It’s been so much fun,” she added. “Its just easy for us - if my energy is a little down (Lorrie) will pull me up … we really pull together.”

The chemistry between the two veteran performers has been successful on tour, she said.

“It really works,” she explained. “You’re going to have your die-hard ‘Pam fans’ and your die-hard ‘Lorrie fans’ but the idea is that by teaming up people just like the combination.”

Their career highlights are numerous and varied. Combined, they have recorded 28 top 10 hits, more than 18 million records sold, and 12 number one songs. There have been Grammys, CMA Awards, movie credits, television appearances, and Broadway performances. They have rocked arenas, helmed world-class symphonies, and toured on almost every continent. These 50-somethings are more than a little flattered that they can still sell out shows, turn heads, and make hearts beat fast nearly four decades into their careers. Tillis said the Grits and Glamour Tour features hit songs from their solo careers, as well as some new music born out of the tour.

“If we leave something out, we apologize in advance,” she said with a laugh. “But we try to get it all in.”

The two performers are also excited about a new compilation of recordings titled ‘Dos Divas’ - a takeoff on some marketing ploys used by some other country artists.

“We thought that had a cool ring to it,” Tillis said. “We started writing a song ‘out of nowhere’ that became the title track. Fans of ‘My Vida Loca’ will like ‘Dos Divas,’” she said.

Formed in 2009, the Grits and Glamour tour is a “together is better” event. The show is only loosely scripted. Good-natured ribbing and off-the-cuff remarks are just part of the fun. They add tight harmonies to each other’s material, classic songs like Tillis' “Maybe It Was Memphis,” and “Mi Vida Loca,” and Morgan’s “Something In Red” and “Except for Monday” as well as new and original music from more recent recordings. The ladies are backed by some of Nashville’s finest musicians and singers.

The Sept. 21 concert is sponsored by the J. Tom Eady Charitable Trust, Corsicana Bedding, Inc., Community National Bank and Trust, Guardian Industries, Corp., and Nelson Propane Gas, Inc.

Tickets are $50, $45, and $40.  Call the Palace at 903.874.7792 for tickets.
