Corsicana — Summer events can be hit or miss, with families pulled in many different directions with so many places to see and things to do. By any measuring stick, though, last week’s Movie on the Green at Fullerton-Garitty Park passed.

With flying colors.

To recap, Northland Communications presented Movie on the Green last Friday, with the help of sponsors Dr Pepper, Two Doors Down, Corsicana Parks and Recreation and the Corsicana Daily Sun. The Kiwanis Club helped serve free popcorn and drinks.

“I was extremely pleased with the way the night went and incredibly impressed by the positive response from the community,” Northland Communications Marketing Director Kelsey Teel said.

Teel and her team were expecting 200 people to attend, maybe 300. Crowd estimates went as high as 500.

“I’ve never experienced an event in Corsicana that had such a positive sense of community,” she said.

The action was scheduled to start at 7 p.m. with some fun and games centered around the amphitheater stage, and the movie — the family hit “Dolphin Tale” — was to begin around dark, which these days is about 9 p.m.

Before 6:30, there were plots claimed by families on the amphitheater’s viewing hill, and by 7, the number had surpassed 200 people.

“That is when my excitement really started to build, and I knew it was going to be a success,” Teel said.

Dr Pepper donated 360 drinks, Teel said, but by 8 p.m. all that was left was water. And that included a run to a local grocery store by Northland employees for 11 more cases. Fortunately, Navarro College donated the use of a second popcorn machine. It was needed.

The movie ran until almost 11, but held the crowd captive throughout. It also solicited an ovation once it ended.

After it was over, the Daily Sun received a string of positive remarks on its Facebook page. Among them were:

• We had a great time! Kids loved it! Hope to have more movie nights on the green :);

• It was awesome! A free movie plus popcorn and drinks! Nice job guys!!!;

• Loved it! What a great community event for the family!;

• We need many more of these family friendly experiences ... Fullerton Garrity (sic) is an amazing location that is so underutilized!! With Texas weather we could have these well throughout the fall even with old black and white movies and a live music series with local talent!!;

• Really enjoyed it, we need more family friendly events like this. Hope there are more movie nights to come!;

• This was the best thing so far that Corsicana has offered. Though the movie didn't end till close to 11PM it was totally worth it to spend QUALITY time with my little ones, family and other families who enjoy a sense of COMMUNITY. I can't wait to blog about it with pictures I took!

There were very few complaints, including one about the screen size for the people in the back. Pre-movie music choices were also mentioned, but Teel said her crew is looking at ways to improve the event, and make it bigger and better.

Yes, there just may be more Movie on the Green nights in the future.

“Due to the positive response from the community, we definitely want to do another one,” she said, pointing toward the fall for the next one. “In the meantime, we are planning to do an ice cream social toward the end of the summer that will be another fun and free event for the Corsicana community.”

There have also been talks about possibly adding a donation drive and asking attendees to bring a donation for a spotlighted charitable organization in exchange for a popcorn and drink ticket.

“This would be on a voluntary basis of course,” Teel said. “We still want the event to be free.”
