Corsicana — Navarro County businessman Bobby Vickery has announced that he will run for the Texas House District 8 Seat, representing Anderson, Navarro, Hill and Freestone Counties, in the March 4 Republican Primary.

Vickery is the owner of Texas Environmental Training & Compliance, LLC. He is actively involved in the community as chairman of trustees for the Frost United Methodist Church and as a director for the Frost Community Center. His wife is a teacher and they have two children.

“We have an out-of-control state budget and we need leaders in Austin who will fight for fiscal discipline,” Vickery said. “We don’t need a government that looks like California. We need government that does a few core jobs and leaves Texans free to run their own lives.”

One of those core functions of state government is education.

“We’re spending almost half of our education dollars outside of the classroom,” Vickery said. “We need to prioritize those dollars where they belong — paying the good teachers who are educating our students every day.”

Another key issue for Vickery is fully funding the Teachers Retirement System, which he said has been facing the possibility of default in recent years.

“We must keep the commitment we have made to our Texas teachers, and put TRS on a sound financial footing for years to come,” Vickery said.

Vickery said he will work at the state level to fight Obamacare, which he said is causing millions of Americans to lose health insurance and causing uncertainty in the economy.

Vickery stated in a release announcing his candidacy that he is a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, is pro-life, and while he believes America must always be welcoming of legal immigrants, state and federal policies should not give amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Incumbent State Rep. Byron Cook (R-Corsicana) has also filed for the March GOP primary.
