Church News for Friday, Dec. 27, 2013

— Straightway Missionary Baptist Church at 400 South 15th Street, under the leadership of Pastor A.E. Smith, will celebrate its mission program Sunday at 11 a.m. Devotion by Straightway youth, song by Straightation, and a special dance by the praise dancer of the church. Sis. T. Wade will present the mission statement, and Sis. S. Bradley will give the welcome. The young men of the church will have the opportunity to be crowned Mr. Straighway. Nominees are T. Mcadams, D. Caldwell, A.Anderson, and D. Brown. President Evangelist Kitchen is excited to see the youth department work hard as missionaries. Reese Hicks will serve as the speaker of the hour. Reese is an 8th grade student at St. John’s Episcopal School in Dallas and a graduate of St. Phillips School and Community Center. Reese is an avid lacrosse, baseball and basketball player and is a member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  If you are a youth or the parent of a youth or know a youth in Corsicana, you will not want to miss the exciting look at mission work from a teen’s point of view. Operation Mission 2014 - Access Granted is a must hear message for everyone. Reese is the son of Shari Reese Hicks and Duane Hicks Hicks. He is the grandson of Alma Reese and the late Ozell Reese and John and Detria Hicks of Dallas. Come one come all and here this though provoking message, you will not leave the same way that you came.  



Westside Baptist Church will have its 5th Sunday Gospel Singing Celebration at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29. The all-music program will consist of solos, duets, the Westside Quartet and full choir. Featured guest singers will include Vicki Trimble singing ‘Oh Holy Night,” Yvonne Momalove singing “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” and Dan Layne singing “Til the Storm Passes By.” The public is invited to attend the program. Dessert fellowship will immediately follow the service. A nursery will be provided. Westside is located at 1522 North 24th Street in Corsicana.     Lacy Rose Goodrich, 9, is a typical Bowie fourth-grader. She likes to watch “Full House,” reruns and “iCarly,” and she has a dog and a cat. She takes gymnastics and dance lessons, and has attended four different Vacation Bible Schools this summer, as well as all the parks and recreation summer programs for kids.
    What’s unusual about Lacy is that she also raised nearly $500 for the food pantry since Easter, which is the equivalent of 3,450 pounds of food for hungry Navarro County residents.

  • City cancels ambulance contract with county

    The City of Corsicana has notified Navarro County officials it is cancelling its agreement with the county to provide EMS ambulance service to areas outside the city limits. According to a letter sent to county officials by Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, ambulance service to county residents will end on Jan. 31, 2015.

    The project to rebuild Seventh Avenue or Highway 31 as it goes through Corsicana is almost over. From an uneven patchwork of paving and pitted concrete, now it’s a smooth ride from Beaton all the way through town.
    It just took an extra year to finish.
