Teen wounded; youth detained in investigation

Corsicana — A 15-year-old Corsicana boy is hospitalized with a shotgun wound, and another youth detained by juvenile authorities after what police are preliminarily calling an accidental shooting.

Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton said the victim’s wound is “not life-threatening” after being struck in the face with a shotgun blast Wednesday.

Police were called to the 1300 block of West Fifth Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a 9-1-1 call reporting the incident.

Bratton said based on preliminary information gathered by detectives, it’s possible the incident is an accidental shooting.

“(The victim) and another 15-year-old male friend of his were handling a shotgun in the bathroom of the residence when the shotgun discharged, striking the victim in the face,” Bratton said. He said the two boys were alone in the house when the shooting took place.

Bratton said the victim was transported to Navarro Regional Hospital, then on to Parkland Hospital for treatment of his wounds.

The second youth was seen running from the home following the shooting, and then told a family member he had accidentally shot someone, Bratton said.

The family member contacted the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office, and deputies picked him and the youth up in Angus and brought them to the Justice Center for questioning.

Bratton said the youth appeared before Justice of the Peace Vicki Gray, and then was detained in connection with an investigation of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in a reckless manner.

Because both the shooting victim and the youth being detained are minors, their names are not being released by law enforcement.

Bratton said detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
