The Shakers and Scrapers car club will hold their monthly meeting at VG'z pavilion ( 301 E. 3rd Ave) at 6:30 p.m. Shakers and Scrapers is a very diverse group of folks with a common interest of cars and a desire to help local charities and events. We hold an annual car show during Derrick Days which helps to support a local charity. The G.W. Jackson Multicultural Society Inc. presents A Gospel Extravaganza — Make a Joyful Noise through song and dance at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at the IOOF Event Center. Scheduled to perform are  Mattie Robinson, concert pianist/vocalist of Austin; The Gospel Five, Chosen Ministry of Navarro College, M. Jackson and M. Jose Antonio Navarro Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, will celebrate the birth of the Chapter namesake, Jose Antonio Navarro, at 2 p.m. at his statue on the Navarro County Courthouse south lawn. Chapter acting president Mellie Howard will present the program. Navarro County is invited to come and participate in this recognition of this famous Texas Hero who represented Texans at such a crucial point in Texas history and to learn more about the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Relay for Life team “Sugar Rush for a Cure” will hold a Lunch Time Special at Super 1 Foods, 100 N. 15th St., from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Taco Soup and a drink with all the trimmings will be sold for $6, with sweet treats available for purchase as well. Piecemakers' Quilt Guild of Corsicana  meets on the first Monday of every month at 9:30 a.m. Each meeting starts with refreshments and a time to visit with other members and visitors. A short business meeting starts at 10 a.m., followed by door prizes and show and tell. This month's program features a member of our guild, Susan Copeland demonstrating sewing fabric post cards with a workshop following program. Visitors are welcome to come and join us. Meeting is at the Westhill Church of Christ fellowship hall.

Bark for Life (sponsored by the American Cancer Society) will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bunert Park, 201 Bunert Park Road. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., $10 per dog. It is a non-competitve walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. Also at Bunert Park during Bark for Life will be a CASI-qualifying chili cookoff event, and a Car Show sponsored by The Cars of Navarro County.



When Are We Going Home Ministry and Break N Free Camp presents the Riding High Horsemanship Program to be held at 4719 NE CR 1040 in Rice. Call for directions and to RSVP to (903) 422-6120 (to get an accurate count). This event is free and open to all medically challenged, special needs and disabled children and foster children and their immediate siblings up to the age of 21. Lunch will be provided, just bring lawn chairs, yourself and your family. A handicapped ramp is available, as well as side/front walkers, and a playground. The event will include riding, saddling, safety, feeding and care of horses, and a short devotion.



March 9

A benefit for Eddie Smith will be held at The Remington, 122 W. Third Ave., from 1 to 7 p.m. There will be live music by Faster Horses and Sissy Perry with Robert Horvath and the Groovetones. Live auction as well. Eddie Smith suffered a heart attack which resulted in being transported by air ambulance. He and his family are self-employed and have no health insurance. The Remington is acception donations for raffle/auction items and food to serve, as well as cash donations. An account is established at Chase Bank in the name of Smith Benefit.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West 7th Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

Corsicana Vendor’s Day will be held at 801 N. 13th St. from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This show will benefit the Navarro County Food Pantry. Vendors will do individual raffles for items at their booths with cash from these raffles being donated to the Food Pantry in order to purchase food in bulk from the food bank. Each customer that brings in items for the food pantry will be given an entry for the door prize. Five items equals five entries.



March 16

Benefit and Auction for Bruce Adams will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Remington Ranch Event Center, 122 W. Third Ave., Corsicna. On July 4, 2013 Adams suffered a stroke and was transported by air ambulance to Baylor. He had a second stroke in the emergency room, and was in the hospital for several months. Since he has not been able to return to work, family and friends are hosting this brisket lunch benefit and auction to help him with his mounting medical bills. Adams served as a volunteer firefighter for 15 years for the Navarro Volunteer Fire Department, and they are assisting with the auction. Ira Bradford and Bustin’ Loose will perform. G.W. Jackson Heritage Rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. at the Navarro County Exposition Center. This pro rodeo still needs sponsorships. All funds raised will go toward construction of the G.W.
