Feb. 27

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Site open from 2 until 7 p.m. to assist the elderly and low income file their tax returns at the Corsicana YMCA. To schedule an appointment, call  281-682-0928.

Jose Antonio Navarro Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, will celebrate the birth of the Chapter namesake, Jose Antonio Navarro, at 2 p.m. at his statue on the Navarro County Courthouse south lawn. Chapter acting president Mellie Howard will present the program. Navarro County is invited to come and participate in this recognition of this famous Texas Hero who represented Texans at such a crucial point in Texas history and to learn more about the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Corsicana Newcomers’ Club will meet at the Kinsloe House at 11 a.m. to learn of the rich history of the Cumbie Museum with guests Gary and Sarah Farley. Call Marge Oslick at 903-872-3508 for more information and reservations.

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Healthy Woman will hold a Fitness Expo 2014 at 5:45 p.m. at the Corsicana YMCA, 400 W. Oaklawn. This event is free to Healthy Woman members. Join Healthy Woman and the YMCA for a fun hour of fitness information, demonstrations, body fat assessments and more. Navarro County AARP Chapter 4653 will meet at 2 p.m. at Northwest Apartments Community Room, 1360 N. 13th St., Corsicana. A musical program will be presented. Guests are always welcomed. Relay for Life team “Sugar Rush for a Cure” will hold a Lunch Time Special at Super 1 Foods, 100 N. 15th St., from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Taco Soup and a drink with all the trimmings will be sold for $6, with sweet treats available for purchase as well. All proceeds of this fundraiser toward Relay for Life. For more information contact Amanda Spear or Lois Garrett at (903) 872-9300.

  • City cancels ambulance contract with county

    The City of Corsicana has notified Navarro County officials it is cancelling its agreement with the county to provide EMS ambulance service to areas outside the city limits. According to a letter sent to county officials by Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, ambulance service to county residents will end on Jan. 31, 2015.

    The project to rebuild Seventh Avenue or Highway 31 as it goes through Corsicana is almost over. From an uneven patchwork of paving and pitted concrete, now it’s a smooth ride from Beaton all the way through town.
    It just took an extra year to finish.

    An attempt to bootleg electricity off a pole using jumper cables is believed to have caused a building fire that took out a former restaurant in Angus Friday morning, one of a series of calls to Navarro County Sheriff’s Office to the southern end of the county over the weekend.
