Corsicana — News and announcement submitted by congregations throughout Navarro County.

Calvario Baptist Church, 606 S. 20th. Street, Corsicana and its Praise and Ministry Worship Team will present an hour long concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012. Calvario celebrates a Praise Service every last Sunday of the month with different members of the church, invited guests, walk-in guests and groups. Calvario has recently organized its Praise and Worship Ministry Team under the direction of Gabriél Rodríguez. Besides the director, the Praise Team includes: Juanita Rodríguez, lead guitarist, José Luna guitarist, Nestor Rodríguez, base guitar, Deanna Ferrer at the drums, and vocalists: Belinda Ferrer, Alicia Aldape, Adela Castillo, Verónica Sardina, and Norma Ortega.

God's Holy Temple Cogic Women In White Women Day Service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday. Program coordinator is Lady Jackie Grant. We have a mighty faithful woman of God who will bring the morning message. Sis. Yolanda Grant Cottman is the wife of Rev. Martin Cottman. They serve faithfully at God Holy Temple Church. Pastor is Elder Eric Grant Sr and Lady Jackie Grant.

Unity Baptist Church, 101 S. 30th St., where Chad Owens is pastor, invites you to services: Sunday School 9:45 a.m.  Sunday — Worship and Children’s Church at 11 a.m., Training Classes at 5 p.m., Worship at 6 p.m., and Wednesday — Mid Week Service at 7 p.m. Kings Kids class meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Tuesday, a group from Unity visits shut-ins. Thursday, there is a Bible study at Northwest Apartments Community Center at 7 p.m. Sunday, a group teaches and sings at Twilight Nursing Home at 9 a.m. and another group sings at Country Meadows at 2 p.m. For transportation to services, call (903) 872-2861. A nursery is open for church services.

Bethel A.M.E. Church and the Dennis Johnson Missionary Society will observe Missionary Day at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30. Special guest speaker will be Evangelist MachleAnn Grant of the Macedonia Baptist Church of Streetman where Rev. Joe Hubbard Sr. is her pastor and Minister Florine Hubbard is the first lady. Bethel W.M.S. President is Sis. Du’Ane Yancy. Rev. and Mrs. Willie L. Greene Sr. are Bethel’s pastor and wife.

    Lacy Rose Goodrich, 9, is a typical Bowie fourth-grader. She likes to watch “Full House,” reruns and “iCarly,” and she has a dog and a cat. She takes gymnastics and dance lessons, and has attended four different Vacation Bible Schools this summer, as well as all the parks and recreation summer programs for kids.
    What’s unusual about Lacy is that she also raised nearly $500 for the food pantry since Easter, which is the equivalent of 3,450 pounds of food for hungry Navarro County residents.

    The jury called for Aug. 4 at 8:30 a.m. District Court, Judge James Lagomarsino has been dismissed.

    Water rates, sewer rates and trash rates will all go up for Corsicana city residents, according to preliminary budget figures presented to the city council Thursday afternoon.

  • City cancels ambulance contract with county

    The City of Corsicana has notified Navarro County officials it is cancelling its agreement with the county to provide EMS ambulance service to areas outside the city limits. According to a letter sent to county officials by Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, ambulance service to county residents will end on Jan. 31, 2015.

    The project to rebuild Seventh Avenue or Highway 31 as it goes through Corsicana is almost over. From an uneven patchwork of paving and pitted concrete, now it’s a smooth ride from Beaton all the way through town.
    It just took an extra year to finish.

    An attempt to bootleg electricity off a pole using jumper cables is believed to have caused a building fire that took out a former restaurant in Angus Friday morning, one of a series of calls to Navarro County Sheriff’s Office to the southern end of the county over the weekend.
