Corsicana reports sewage spill

Corsicana — An estimated 250,000 gallons of raw sewage ended up in the streets and ditches Wednesday because of a massive leak of rainwater into the wastewater system, according to a report from the city’s environmental services director.

Charles Leist reported the spill to the state, as well as the Corsicana Daily Sun, as part of the legal requirements to notify the public.

“It was the influx of a bunch of rain,” Leist said. “It overloaded the facility and forced an outflow of sewage.”

There were two spills, one at the corner of Beverly and Lexington; and a second one at the corner of South 17th Street and South 15th streets.

The one on South 17th Street went into the ditch, while the one on Lexington went into the street, he said.

City crews were busy all day Thursday cleaning up as much as possible and trying to find where the stormwater was getting into the wastewater system and plugging the leaks, Leist said.

The city doesn’t have any wells or ponds in the area that should be affected, although anyone who has a well within half a mile of the site is cautioned not to drink the water, or boil it beforehand.

People who come into contact with the spill, waste material, soil or water from the spill should bathe and wash their clothes as soon as possible, according to the notice.
