Corsicana — A listing of meetings and events of interest from throughout Navarro County

Feb. 5

Corsicana Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be at the Corsicana YMCA from 2 to 7 p.m. If you are low income (usually under $42K) or elderly, and in need of tax filing assistance, take advantage of this free program. This year VITA will see clients with appointments first and then work with walk-ins. VITA is at the YMCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at the Kerens Library on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. Call George Burrell at (903) 879-2091 to schedule your appointment.

Navarro County Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance meets at 6 p.m. each Tuesday, in the fellowship hall at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 N. 14th St., Corsicana.  All are welcome to learn to give and receive support at the weekly meetings. On the first Tuesday of the month, Dr. Tom Sheriff, licensed psychologist, joins the group discussions on various aspects of mental health. The Blooming Grove Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. in the museum at 201 S. Fordyce in Blooming Grove.  All interested people are invited to attend.  For more information call (903) 695-2724 or (903) 673-2635.

Oak Valley Crime Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Oak Valley Community Center. Crime Watch will furnish the dinner, all are asked to bring desserts. For more information, call Bruce at (903) 519-1745.

Feb. 6

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle physician lecture will be held at noon in the hospital classrooms, featuring Zachary Drain, MD, Navarro Regional Hospital ER, will present an in-service on chest pain, including what to expect when you come you come to the ER with chest pain. The Furnishings  Committee, headed by Donna Ingram, with Cecelia Alexander, Shirley Barnes, Kathryn Corley,Linda Fannin, Carolyn French, Corinne Lee, Jan Moore, Edna Richardson, Ruth Scott, Jo Skews, and Carlene Woolf will have their program at Kinsloe House at noon. Members who attend will enjoy a presentation by Lt. Ken Authier, with the Texas DPS. Lt. Authier is a very interesting speaker. His presentation will be on Personal Safety. He always presents his information in such a way that it relates to all of us. Members must make their reservations or cancellations by noon, Feb. 4, 2013, by calling the Kinsloe House at 903-874-5791.

    Statewide, sales taxes are up almost 4 percent compared to a year ago. Navarro County is surpassing the state on average for the year-to-date collections. Navarro County’s sales taxes are up 5.3 percent for the year thus far, while the state averages are up 5.2 percent.
