Corsicana — The Corsicana City Council voted to amend the 2013 budget by $38,000 to pay for repairs to the walls of the Pocket Park downtown when the group met in regular session Tuesday. The small parapet wall which normally would rise above the roof is weakening and has bowed in the back. The contract to do the work was awarded to Watkins Development.

The company will remove the small parapet walls on the front and back, to remove any danger of falling, and then will stabilize the remaining walls. They will also remove all the wooden bits, including the window frames, and replace them with metal, according to Loran Seely, with Watkins Development.

In addition, the council voted to close and abandon an alley that runs between the skating rink building and the Round Top and the former Dairy Queen. The alley is 20 feet wide, but it will be divided between the two property owners, to allow for more parking.

The council also took the following actions:

• Canceled the May 11 elections, since there were five offices up for election and none of the seats were opposed.

• Heard a presentation from auditor Danny Strunc from Yeldell, Wilson and Co., about the city’s finances. The auditor didn’t find any problems with the finances.

• Presented a state award for distinction to the City Secretary/Finance Director Ginger Richardson, and Assistant Director John Samford, regarding the city’s investment policy.

• Heard from Ann Massey, who filed a 150-page complaint about the city’s management, and specifically regarding the city’s purchasing policies. She urged the council to listen to the expertise of people in the community who have more experience in these matters than they do.

• During the mayor’s announcements, Mayor Chuck McClanahan spoke briefly about the Second Saturday event downtown on April 13, and then Derrick Days, which will be on April 27.
