— The Wortham Independent School District cancelled classes Friday after discussions with law enforcement over security.
The funeral services for Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia were scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Wortham.
The announcement was made in a press release from Wortham Superintendent Dr. Bruce Tabor.
Tabor said there was no "one specific threat to schools" in the decision to cancel classes, made at about 6:30 a.m. Friday morning in consultation with law enforcement, school board members, staff and parents.
“We continue to work closely with law enforcement to assure appropriate measures are in place for the safety of our campuses," Tabor said in the email announcing the closing. "Furthermore, we hope that this decision will assist family members, parents, citizens, and law enforcement in their focus today.”
Athletic events are not affected by the cancellation of Friday classes, and school is expected to resume on Monday, April 8.
School officials said a decision will be made next week about any possible makeup day that may be required because of Friday's closure.
