The Corsicana school choirs are releasing a CD of Christmas and winter-themed music, just in time for the annual choir concert.
The concert will take place beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Corsicana High School auditorium.
Some 300 students from seven choirs around the school district will be performing in the concert, and on the CD.
“There’s various traditional Christmas pieces, and some non-traditional pieces as well,” said Mike Huffstetler, choir director. The traditional material includes standards such as “White Christmas,” while the non-traditional material is less-well-known, he said.
“But it’s definitely worth a listen,” he added.
Among the groups performing in both the concert and on the CD are the Drane choir, which is so large that it takes two classes in which to meet; the three Collins choirs — Chorale, Boys and Treble; and the three choirs at the high school, which are the Concert Women’s Choir; the Concert Mixed Choir, and the A’Capella choir.
At the concert, each of the choirs will sing two songs, and all of the choirs will participate in three songs. On the CD, each choir gets one song in the interest of brevity.
“We had to pick out which songs to put on the CD,” Huffstetler said. “Obviously, we wanted the ones that sound best, but we also wanted to program the CD in such a way that it would be able to stand on its own.”
Admission to the concert is free and open to the public. The cost of a CD will be about $10, Huffstetler estimated.
The request to do a CD came from the CISD administration offices, and is being well-received, he said.
“It was a great idea,” he said. “We’ve been consistently growing over the past few years in both numbers and quality, so this is definitely an exciting venture for us.”
Copies of the CD can be purchased Thursday night at the concert, or from the Corsicana High School choir department. People interested in buying one call (903) 874-8211 and ask for Mike Huffstetler, or e-mail him at email@example.com.
