Nostalgia on wheels

Vintage trailers combine kitsch and camping

Corsicana — It was an odd-looking little caravan that came through Corsicana Thursday morning, with campers older than any of the cars pulling them, and older than some of the drivers, too.

The Texas Group of Vintage Campers, a subset of the Tin Can Tourist Camping Group, was heading off through Navarro County bound for a site near Weatherford for the weekend.

Their pull-behind camping trailers were from the 1950s and ‘60s, aluminum and early plastic, with that kitschy look that’s so old it’s cool again.

Frances Bearden of Athens was happy to relate the story of how she scored her 1967 Shasta Compact, rescuing it from a pasture where it had been abandoned to grow moss and fungus. She’s a camper rescuer, her friends joked.

Finding and renovating the old campers is a fast-growing hobby, said Linda Jackson, who pulled her 1960 Forester Cub all the way from The Woodlands near Houston.

The campers attract attention wherever they go, either on the streets of Corsicana, or at a park, explained Riså Rogers Tiller of Blooming Grove, who owns a 1959 Mobile Scout. She’s had people in funeral processions stop when they see her camper, she said.

“Vintage campers are unique,” added Kathy Bennett.

Kimberly Curry, along for the ride, said there’s a fun nostalgia that comes with the vehicles.

“They remind you of your childhood,” she said.
