Familiar Faces

Corsicana — Corsicana's Richard Parker donated a copy of his latest book to the Genealogy department at the Corsicana Public Library. Parker's second book tells the life story of his father, Richard Denny Parker, who was an instrumental figure in the oversight of the oil and gas industry in East Texas. Sawyer receives national honor

The National Honor Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) announced Corsicana High School student Branna Sawyer of Corsicana has been selected to become a member of the esteemed organization. The society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment. The announcement was made by NSHSS founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel prizes.

“On behalf of NSHSS, I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice and commitment that Branna has demonstrated to achieve his exceptional level of academic excellence,” said Nobel. “Branna is now a member of a unique community of scholars — a community that represents our very best hope for the future.”

Membership in the NSHSS entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, personalized recognition items, and publicity honors.

Sawyer is a junior at Corsicana High School. She is the daughter of Jeff and Christi Sawyer of Corsicana.

  • YMCA warns against woman fraudulently soliciting funds

    A woman has been soliciting funds, falsely portraying herself as representing the YMCA, Executive Director Terry Seth reported late Wednesday afternoon. A business owner in town informed Seth a lady solicited his business, saying she was raising money for the YMCA for a program for deaf children. Seth says the YMCA does not have such a program.

    About a dozen local businesses are opening their doors for the Derrick Days Wine and Cheese stroll this year, and many are only doing it as an open house opportunity.

    The stroll is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. April 24 in downtown Corsicana. It's free and open to the public.
