Coin collectors in town through Saturday, seeing rare pieces

Corsicana — Less than a day and a half on site, and Bryce McKeithon has already made a significant find in Corsicana.

“We had a couple of really nice flying eagle pennies, and we gave him a high price for them,” McKeithon smiled.

The National Coin Collectors Association representative is stationed in a meeting room at the La Quinta Inn, welcoming local residents who have rare coins (dated before 1964), gold and/or silver they may want to sell, or just find out the value of their collectibles.

Traffic has been steady, and despite Wednesday’s rain, he encouraged anyone interested to move quickly.

“Friday and Saturday, it gets real busy,” McKeithon said.

What: Paying cash for your U.S. and foreign coins and currency

When: 9 a.m.-6 p.m., through Saturday

Where: La Quinta Inn, 2020 Regal Drive off State Hwy. 31

The NCCA will be at the La Quinta through Saturday, giving appraisals and making offers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

In addition to the flying eagle pennies, McKeithon said early local buys have included Krugerrands. Wednesday morning, he was sifting through a pile of rare nickels and some silverware.

“I’ve been doing this a few years,” he said. “I’ve always been interested in coins since I was a kid.”

Coin collecting remains a popular hobby, he said. The market for NCCA to resell local purchases remains high, and often times lucrative.

“We deal with thousands of customers,” McKeithon said, “and I’ve seen hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on coins. There is a huge interest in them.”

The NCCA is currently based in Houston, and includes a number of teams that visit different locales throughout the country at different times of the year. Big town or small town, McKeithon said the opportunity exists to make a rare find profitable to the experienced collector, or even the person who really doesn’t know what he has, like Wednesday’s flying eagle penny owner.

“We get out and dig deep for people with fine coins, gold and silver, too,” he said.

He encouraged residents with mismatched ear rings, broken necklaces and old jewelry to stop by as well. The NCCA buys more than just coins.

“If it’s just sitting in a drawer collecting dust, it’s not making money,” he said.

Diamonds can also be brought to the La Quinta location.
