Three couples and one organization were honored Saturday as the Navarro County NAACP Branch 6209 held its sixth annual Freedom Fund Banquet.
The organization gave special recognition to Mr. and Mrs. George Burrell, Dr. and Mrs. Charles Biltz and Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Williams for their work within the community and efforts to improve the quality of life in the city.
The group also recognized Navarro County Habitat for Humanity for its work in helping provide new homes in the community.
The theme for the banquet was “Overcoming our Past and Embracing our Future.”
Guest speaker for the evening was Carol Wise, Executive Vice-president and Chief Operating Officer of Dallas Area Rapid Transit. Wise told those in attendance to continue to volunteer and be a part of the community, and to be a mentor for youth.
NAACP President Rowena Winfrey urged participation in the monthly meetings of the local NAACP branch, inviting all to the meetings scheduled at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center.
Winfrey also shared a line from the presentation by Wise to challenge attendees to help others.
“Carol Wise said ‘We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us,’” Winfrey said. “My question to you is whose shoulders are you standing on, and who will you let stand on your shoulders?”
