Wear gets Veteran’s Day gift

Corsicana — Kevin Wear, the Rice soldier wounded in Afghanistan, has been presented with a mortgage-free house, it was announced Saturday at a University of Texas-San Antonio football game.

When the announcement was made, both home and visitor’s sides of the San Antonio stadium went wild.

The house is being remodeled now and the family hopes to be able to move in early December, Wear said Monday.

“It’s beautiful,” he said. “We didn’t get to go in yet, but it’s just overwhelming.”

Wear was informed about the house a couple of weeks ago, but it’s just now sinking in, he said.

“People treat soldiers so well,” he said.

Wear was badly injured in 2012 in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device blew up the vehicle in which he was riding, killing three other soldiers and wounding Wear and another man. Since then, he’s been in and out of hospitals and rehab facilities in San Antonio.

The house was given to his family through the generosity of Wells Fargo bank, the San Antonio Chevrolet dealers, and the Military Warriors Support Foundation.

Although he’s looking at two to four more years worth of medical treatments, Wear is making steady progress in his recovery.

“I’m doing pretty good,” he said. “I’m getting around a lot better. I’m not using my wheelchair.”

It’s the reason they asked for a home in or around San Antonio, Wear explained. He wants to complete his treatments and rehab and get back to the way he was.

“I still have more to contribute,” he added.
