Deadline for property appraisal protest near

Corsicana — Property owners in Navarro County still have about a week to protest their property appraisal values, according to the state and local deadlines.

“It’s always 30 days after the date on the notice, or May 31,” explained Karen Morris, chief appraiser for the Navarro County Appraisal District. “The majority of notices will be May 31, but it does depend on the date of notice. There were some notices that went out a little bit later.”

People who want to protest their appraisals need to file a written notice of protest, which can be done in the office, or on-line for homestead owners.

“This is the first year for e-file, which is the electronic protest for homesteads,” Morris said. “We’ve had about 10 of those this year. It’s very light.”

Most protests can be negotiated in the office, but owners can also appeal to Appraisal Review Board, and about 180 of those appeals have been filed this year, Morris said.

“We’ve handled a few of them here in the office and a lot by phone,” she said. “It’s been a relatively light year. Some things, some classes of houses went up. Some went down, just following the market, and what sales are showing.”

People who want to protest excessive values, unequal appraisals, exemptions, or failure to file notices, can get help on presenting their cases to the ARB from a video on the Texas Comptroller’s Office’s website.

“Property owners have the right to protest if they disagree with any appraisal district action on their property,” Combs said. “My office offers online resources to help taxpayers understand their rights under the law and work their way through the process.”
