Walking for a Cure: Navarro County Relay for Life this Saturday

The American Cancer Society’s Navarro County Relay for Life will look a bit different this year, but will have the same passion, same mission, and same drive to raise money for a cure as in years past.

Relay begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at Asby Stadium in Mildred. This is a change in day and venue from years past; from the 24-hour Friday/Saturday to 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, and from most recently being held at the Cook Center lot at Navarro College to Asby Stadium in Mildred.

“They tried a pilot program with the 2 to 10 p.m. format, and noticed that more families showed up, and they had three times as much participation,” said Becky Long, co-chairman. “So more people were being educated about services provided by the American Cancer Society while raising funds at the same time.”

Opening ceremonies will be held at 2 p.m., with team introductions and the first lap to follow.

The Survivor/Caregiver Reception will begin at 6 p.m. Those attending this reception or who need handicapped parking will be directed by signage to the softball/baseball area at the school. All other parking will be at the Elementary School or at the front of the middle/high school.

“Please do not park at Mildred Baptist Church as there will be a wedding held that day,” said Kay Ovalle, co-chairman.

The Survivor Reception will be followed by a Survivor Lap at 7:30 p.m., and Caregivers will have their own designated lap which begins at 7:45 p.m.

The Luminaria Ceremony, a very moving portion of the evening where candles are lit in memory of those who lost the fight with cancer, and in honor of those still fighting, is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., followed by a Fight Back Ceremony at 9:30 p.m. The Closing Ceremony will follow that.

“School Zone lights will be on that day to slow down traffic, to ensure safety of all attendees,” Ovalle said. “Landon’s Land is a kid’s area with a bounce house, obstacle course and bull riding.”

The Master of Ceremonies will be Carey Dean, and Taylor Parks will perform as well. Olin Williams will serve as the DJ for the event, and the 4-H Clubs will do the pledges and the prayer.

There will be brisket sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, nachos, sweets, popsicles and more food options available.

Drawings available to take part in at the event (if you haven’t already) include a weekend in  Kemah getaway sponsored by the Corsicana Cancer Center, a hunt sponsored by Mildred Baptist Church team, Hunting for a Cure is giving away a YETI Cooler, and Cotton Patch has been selling chances on a special quilt made by the Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild of Corsicana.

“The change of venue to Asby Stadium in Mildred is in hopes of educating the entire county about ACS services,” Long said. “We may be at Mildred three years, then move to Rice, or Blooming Grove, or Dawson. This is Navarro County Relay for Life — not just Corsicana Relay.”
