Rains create logjams on local creeks

Corsicana — In the last week, Navarro County has gotten more than half a foot of rain, and counties to the north have been equally blessed, meaning heavy runoff down the various creeks and rivers.

It also means it’s sweeping a lot of flotsam and jetsam into the creeks, which often hangs up at the lower bridges.

“Whenever we get heavy rains of course the logs come down stream,” said Darwin Myers, area engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation. “What we’ve done recently is removed a jam from the Highway 31 bridge (at Chambers Creek). We’re going to chip all that up and remove it when the water goes down, and then we’ll do the same thing on the Roane Road.”

The department uses a large track hoe machine that breaks up the jam and helps it move downstream. Some of the stuff is sieved out and set aside for removal, if it’s likely to get hung up further downstream again.

Similar problems occur on FM 709 at Richland Creek, with the same solution.

The goal is to remove those logjams to keep them from damaging the bridges,

“When you’ve got bridges with shorter distance between columns things get hung up,” Myers said. They don’t have as many problems with really big high bridges like those found under Interstate 45 because the spans are larger and most of the material passes under without problems.
