Corsicana — A weekend of education, displays and a pair of Civil War re-enactments will benefit youth sports in the Rice area.

The Mike Dickens Memorial Park in Rice is the location of the event, taking place Friday, March 22 through Sunday, March 24, said Roger Barlow of the Mike Dickens Memorial Youth Association.

The fundraiser will benefit youth baseball, basketball, football and soccer in the Rice area, while providing a special day of Civil War education for area school children.

Barlow said the group decided on the Civil War-themed fundraiser due to its popularity.

“We’ve invited area schools to come and see the displays we’ll have all day Friday,” Barlow said. Several Civil War era displays will be set up, including cooking over an open fire, a doll maker, period clothing and utensils, and a chance to visit with Civil War re-enactors.

“They’ll show them how they had to make their own clothes, mend their own clothes, things like that,” Barlow said. A candy maker is also slated to attend.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, and again at 1 p.m. on Sunday, the Civil War battle re-enactments will take place, giving the public a chance to see a simulated battle between soldiers of the Union and the Confederacy. Booths and displays of period artifacts and demonstrations will also take place both days, Barlow said.

“We’ll have some calvary, some infantry, and we’ve got six cannons,” he said. “There will be a lot of ‘booming’ going on.”

Saturday night, a special Civil War-era dance and dinner will take place, which will be by reservation only. The cost for the dinner and dance is $10. Music from the Civil War era will be featured, complete with a “dance caller,” he said.

The displays and the re-enactment will take place at the Mike Dickens Memorial Park in Rice. Ample parking will be available with a shuttle service to the park available.

Friday’s educational session is free to area school children. On Saturday and Sunday, the gates open at 9 a.m. with admission $5, and concessions will be available. To make reservations for the Saturday dinner and dance, call Barlow at (903) 875-4123.
