Police warn of phone ‘scam’

From Staff Reports
Corsicana Daily Sun

Corsicana — Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton informed the Daily Sun of a report of a possible phone “scam” reportedly seeking donations on behalf of his agency.

Bratton said a Corsicana resident reported receiving a call Thursday from a woman who then put a man on the phone claiming to be with the Corsicana Police Department. The male caller told the resident the police were giving out bumper stickers “to keep the crime rate down” and that in return, the police department was asking for a $250 donation. The caller then asked for the resident’s credit card number. When the resident refused, the man hung up.

Bratton said that the Corsicana Police Department does not solicit any kind of donations, either on the telephone or otherwise. He also said the department is not giving out any kind of bumper sticker.

Bratton advises residents who may receive such a call to refuse to provide any information and to hang up immediately.
