Volunteer Income Tax Assistance gearing up

Corsicana — While Christmas and the New Year holiday celebrations are still a month away, preparations are underway for a valuable program in the area that everyone must deal with early in the new year — the individual income tax return.

Volunteers are needed to help prepare tax returns for qualifying low income and elderly individuals through the VITA Program — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.

Training for volunteers will be held on Jan. 25, 2014 at Navarro College from 9 a.m. to noon. Upon completion of the training class, volunteers will be able to take the IRS Basic test and pass it. Those passing the class can then be a part of the VITA volunteers.

The VITA program will be open during tax season on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 7 p.m., but volunteers may choose to work 2 to 5 p.m. or 5 to 7 p.m., and which day. The first day of operation will be Jan. 28, 2014 and the last day will be April 15.

Anyone interested in volunteering in this capacity may call George Burrell at 903-879-2091 or Stuart Schoppert at 903-875-9310.

Assistance will be provided to those who have made an appointment first and walk-ins would be assisted if there is time and staff available. The site is located at the Optimist Room at the YMCA.

“We will also have assistance available at the Kerens Public Library on Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m.,” said Stuart Schoppert, volunteer. “Again, those with appointments will get first priority and we will work walk-ins as we have time and staff available.”

All services are provided at no cost to the filer. Appointments may be made by calling George Burrell at 903-879-2091.
