A group of three skunks, two of which are still on the loose, and one of which has been tested and confirmed as rabid, have been seen in the area of the Walmart recently.
One was also seen Tuesday in the area of Navarro Regional Hospital, according to Police Chief Randy Bratton.
The first instance was when two or three of the animals were seen around noon Saturday near the Walmart gardening center, but they escaped into the creek area by the store.
Later that afternoon, around 4:25 p.m., Sgt. Todd Morris shot one of the skunks near the Verizon store, 3731 W. Seventh Avenue. Because it was out in the daytime and skunks are nocturnal, the animal was sent off for testing at the state lab. On Tuesday, it was confirmed to be rabid.
“We’re asking for people in the area to be particularly alert to skunks in the daytime, and report it to animal control immediately,” Bratton said. “They should assume the skunks are rabid.”
As well, people are asked to make sure their pets’ vaccinations are current and to monitor their animals when outside.
