The three finalists chosen in the search for a new president for Navarro College will visit Corsicana this week for board interviews and a chance to met the public.
Dr. Richard Sanchez announced last year that he would retire on Aug. 31, 2013. A presidential search committee, comprised of representatives from the board of trustees and the public, began the search process for a replacement last fall.
The committee, headed up by Trustee Dr. James Price, narrowed the applicants for the post down to 10, then picked the three finalists for interviews with the Navarro College Board of Trustees. Those interviews will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Following the board interviews, which will be closed to the public, the candidates will take part in a public forum from approximately 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Dawson Auditorium.
On Tuesday, the board will hear from Dr. Rex Peebles, currently Vice-President of Instruction at Midland College in Texas. Previously, Peebles served as Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Austin Community College in Texas. He has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas-Dallas in Political Science; a Master of Arts from the University of Texas-Arlington in Political Science; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Government from the University of Texas at Austin.
Appearing before the board on Wednesday will be Dr. Ron Liss, currently Vice-President for Learning at Santa Fe Community College in Santa Fe, N.M., where he was formerly Vice-President for Academic and Student Affairs. Previously, Liss served as Director of Academic and Student Services at Montgomery College in Maryland. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the State University College of New York at Buffalo; a Master of Arts in Instructional Design from the University of Maryland Baltimore County; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Leadership and Management from American University, Washington, D.C.
Completing the schedule on Thursday will be Dr. Barbara Kavalier, currently President of San Jose City College in San Jose, Calif. Prior to her presidency in San Jose, Kavalier held the positions of Interim President and Vice-President of Student Services at San Diego Mesa College in San Diego, Calif. She received an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree from Mountain View College in Texas; a Bachelor of Science in Education and English from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth; a Master of Arts in Business and Human Relations from Amberton University in Texas; and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin.
The public forums are being held to give college staffers and the public an opportunity to meet the three finalists while they are in Corsicana for interviews by college trustees.
College trustees will also hold their monthly board meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Lone Star Room of the Walker Dining Hall.
