Corsicana — A listing of meeting and events of interest from throughout Navarro County.

Jan. 23

The Corsicana Newcomers' Club will hold it's annual Installation of Officers meeting at the Kinsloe House at 11 a.m. Call Marge Oslick at 903-872-3508 for more information or to make a reservation.

Navarro County AARP Chapter 4653 will meet at 2 p.m. at Northwest Apartments community room, 1360 N. 13th St., Corsicana. Visitors are always welcomed. President Nora Thomas urges all members to attend, bring a covered dish and a door prize. Drinks will be provided. For more information call (903) 396-2765.

Jan. 24

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle presents “Behind the Scenes” with David King M.D. is at 11 a.m. in the hospital classrooms. Dr. King will explain the role of a pathologist. For reservations and more information, contact Connie Beal at 903-654-6892 or email connie_beal@chs.net.

Jan. 25

Training for VITA volunteers (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Navarro College. VITA site opens Jan. 28 through April 15. Volunteers would act as tax preparers for qualifying low income and elderly individuals. Shifts to work the VITA site are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m. or 5 to 7 p.m.

The American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., will host Karaoke Night with Country Sue from 8 p.m. to midnight. For further information call 903-874-3938 after 2 p.m.

Jan. 27

The Emhouse Community Center will meet at 6 p.m. with a membership drive. We welcome each person to come and join. Please bring a covered dish and come have a great fellowship.

Jan. 28

The Navarro County Republican Women will host their first meeting of the new year with a social time and lunch begin at 11:30. The meeting and program will begin promptly at noon at the Republican Headquarters, 111-B West Third Avenue. Guest speaker will be Karen Watson, author of the book “Being Black and Republican in the Age of Obama.” Make your lunch reservations by contacting Sue Ferguson at 903-641-0357. Lunch is $7 at the door.

  • Navarro College seeks public input at Town Hall event

    Community perception of the role Navarro College plays, and how it can better serve Corsicana and Navarro County is the goal of a Town Hall meeting called at the college for Monday, April 21. The town hall presentation will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Richard M. Sanchez Library on the Corsicana campus.

    After the hail storm Monday, the Corsicana Police Department began receiving several calls from citizens reporting roofing contractors going door to door soliciting to inspect and repair roofs from possible hail damage.

And that storm — typical of spring and summertime weather in Texas — preceded by less than 24 hours a forecast of expected near-freezing temperatures.

    The Corsicana City Council is going to tell the city's story in a big, big way — on a 48 foot wide electronic billboard on Interstate 45. The council approved the purchase and construction of the new sign Monday, one that will help promote city events and attractions, and hopefully attract visitors — and their dollars — to the city's businesses and events.
