Collins Catholic School observes national celebration

Corsicana — On Sunday, Jan. 26, James L. Collins Catholic School began a week-long celebration of National Catholic Schools Week.

James L. Collins is one of the 38 schools in the Dallas Catholic Diocese that serves some 15,000 students throughout the diocese.

The celebration kicked off with ambassador students at all Masses greeting parishioners and guests prior to Mass as well as participating in the Mass as readers and gift bearers. Before Mass a short video titled “Catholic School Advantage” was shown. Following Mass, students offered tickets for Destination Celebration Southern Style scheduled for Feb. 15, the semi-annual fundraising gala that offers a silent and live auction, a steak dinner for two, with music by Randy Brown Band, and the opportunity to win a 2013 Ford F-150 XL donated by Brinson Ford. Tickets may also be purchased at the school office.

The week will consist of many activities to help celebrate Catholic Schools Week, ranging from wearing crazy socks on Monday for “Catholic Schools knock your socks off,” to children writing thank you notes to parents for providing them with a Catholic Education, and a speech and drama competition.

As the week goes on the activities intensify with “Walk by Faith Wednesday” where parents, parishioners and the community are invited to join the children with an all school Mass in the gym and a Welcoming Breakfast in the cafeteria.

On “Thankful Thursday” the children will be off-campus performing community service around town. The week will end with a basketball tournament between the seventh and eighth graders with help from Navarro College basketball team and Fr. Jason Cargo will make a guest appearance joining them on the court.
