UPDATE: Bomb threat empties factory

Corsicana — A telephone threat made by man who claimed to be a fired employee resulted in the evacuation of Corsicana's Russell Stover Candy factory Wednesday morning.

Employees were evacuated shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday, waiting in the parking lot as managers, maintenance workers and Corsicana Police searched the plant for an explosive that the caller allegedly said was going to go off.

“An adult male caller called and said he had been terminated from Russell Stover, and that he had put a bomb in the building,” said Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton.

“There were a lot of phones ringing in the background,” Bratton said of the threatening call, “making it sound like he was in a work environment.”

Bratton said police contacted Russell Stover about the call and responded to the plant. He said plant officials told them they had not recently terminated anyone, and had had no threats made to them.

The search of the building turned up nothing suspicious, Bratton said.

David Shatland, Chief Financial Officer of Russell Stover Candies in Kansas City, said the company followed safety procedures in place for such incidents.

“We received notice of the 9-1-1 call, we followed our procedures and evacuated the building,” Shatland said. “The police searched and no explosives were discovered.” Employees returned to the building about an hour later.

“Everyone is safe, and it’s now a police matter,” he said.

Bratton praised management and employees of the Russell Stover plant for their cooperation in the investigation.
