Man dies after incident involving off-duty Malakoff officer

Corsicana — Texas Rangers have been called to take over an investigation into the death of a man following an incident involving an off-duty Malakoff police officer.

Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner said his agency received a call shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday reporting an apparent wreckless driving incident on East Highway 31 west of Corsicana involving a truck towing a trailer, and a motorcycle.

Tanner said deputies arrived at a location in Navarro County on East Highway 31 at Chambers Creek to find two individuals apparently involved in the incident on the side of the road. The man who was believed to have been driving the truck was in handcuffs, Tanner said. The second person at the scene — believed to be the motorcycle rider — was later identified as an off-duty Malakoff police officer.

Tanner said shortly after deputies arrived, the man in handcuffs fell ill, and medical help was summoned. Deputies then removed the handcuffs from the man and performed CPR while waiting for medics to arrive. The man was transported by ambulance to Navarro Regional Hospital where he died.

The deceased victim is believed to be from Iowa, but his identity has not been released, nor has the name of the off-duty police officer.

Tanner said no arrests or charges had been made by his agency Wednesday morning.

The probe is being turned over to the Texas Rangers because an off-duty officer was involved in the incident, Tanner said.
