City Council deeds property

Corsicana — The Corsicana City Council officially transferred ownership of an abandoned city street to Calvary Worship Center Monday, paving the way for construction of a Family Dollar Store on North 13th Street.

The council voted to deed ownership of a strip of land separating property owned by the church and land owned by the Corsicana Housing Authority.

The land was formerly known as Jones Street, and ran west from 13th Street for 340 feet. It was closed by action of the Corsicana City Council in 1954. The city, however, retained the right to install utilities in the right-of-way, and to reopen the street should it be deemed necessary. To date — some 60 years later — that hasn’t been needed.

City Manager Connie Standridge explained that typically in such cases, half the land would go to each of the two adjacent property owners. However, the Corsicana Housing Authority passed a resolution on Jan. 27 telling the city it did not want any interest in the property.

Atmos Energy, Oncor, AT&T and Northland Cable all approved of the move as well, according to a document provided to council members.

The council voted unanimously to deed the property to the church, who has already submitted a zoning change request for adjoining property to change from Multi-family to General Retail. Action on that request is expected Feb. 20.

A sign announcing plans to build a Family Dollar Store at the site was erected last fall.

Mayor Pro-Tem Ruby Williams presided over the Monday council meeting in the absence of Mayor Chuck McClanahan. Williams announced that the city offices would be closed on Monday, Feb. 17, in observance of President’s Day.
